Motorists heading to the beach in cars loaded with surfboards and hampers might think they've been driving a little too long when they see a man on skis whiz past.

Otago student Scott Kvick is putting an unusual twist on his summer holiday by skiing the length of New Zealand.

He glided through Palmerston North yesterday on his roller-skis, as part of his 2100-kilometre trip. He is covering an average of 60km a day to raise money for CanTeen and SPCA. "It's both a personal challenge and a fundraiser. I wanted to cover New Zealand in a unique way."

He plays ice hockey but found roller blades weren't strong enough on New Zealand's rough roads. So after searching the internet he found some off-road roller blades and ski-poles.

His hands and feet are covered in blisters, he has had to throw himself into ditches at the last minute to avoid traffic, and he has sweated and shivered his way from Cape Reinga to Palmerston North but he's not giving up.

The plan is to be in Bluff on January 11.

So far he has raised just over $1000.
