Saving the planet doesn't mean driving around in a nerd-mobile.

According to the group of environmentalists who turned out for the ZeroNow exhibition at Te Manawa yesterday, green vehicles can still be sexy.

American couple Eva Hakansson and Bill Dube have created the world's fastest electric motorbike, proving electric vehicles can still be high-performance.

Named the Killacycle, it has 500 horsepower and can reach speeds of up to 280 kilometres per hour.

It can run for an entire weekend before it needs to be charged.

And the cost of running it: about 3 cents per kilometre.

Mr Dube said it ultimately came down to selling people what they want.

"People aren't going to drive a nerd mobile, this proves there's no excuse for electric vehicles to go slow."

Greenstage director Philip Court agrees.

He has created a sleek red sports car, run by battery, that he believes will be able to race in the New Zealand Sports Car series and beat fuel-powered vehicles.

It could reach 200kmh and go a complete race without needing to be charged, he said.

"Within five years' time people will be going: `listen to those old petrol cars'."
