Nearby workers called emergency services after a Subaru Impreza and a Toyota Corolla collided on Works Rd, near State Highway 56, about 9am yesterday.

The driver of the Toyota, Anthony Millar, 32, of Palmerston North, was cut free from the severely damaged car by firefighters.

St John ambulance paramedics took him to Palmerston North Hospital with critical injuries. He died in hospital yesterday.

The Subaru driver, a 26-year-old Palmerston North man, was taken to hospital with serious injuries after his head and chest hit the car's steering wheel and windscreen.

Initial investigations showed the Toyota was most likely doing U-turn when it and the Subaru collided. Works Rd has a 70kmh speed limit, but police have not determined if speed was a factor.

Senior Sergeant Nick Dobson, head of the Central Districts Serious Crash Unit, said witnesses were being spoken to, but police wanted to hear from anyone with information about the crash.

Serious crash unit analysts were investigating the potential causes, Mr Dobson said.

Constable Greg Robinson said an interview had been set up with a truck driver who was in the area at the time of the crash.

Anyone with information can contact Mr Robinson at the Palmerston North police station on 3513600.
