Fielding's Makino Aquatic Centre's redevelopment is now estimated to cost $5 million – $3.87m more than first thought.
As part of last year's Manawatu District Council's long-term plan process, new developments were added to the project, including a new lap and learners' pools.
Council strategic planner Philip Bronn said the initial $1.13m cost for the pool redevelopment was only an estimate. Council did not want the additional costs to be transferred to ratepayers.
"We don't see capital costs will be from rates at all, so council will be investigating viable funding sources." These sources included loans, grants, development contributions and reserves.
The Makino Park project, which includes a man-made beach, a $400,000 domed play area, a $150,000 skatepark and pathways, was intended to be made when the pool was to be reveloped but will be put on hold until the aquatic centre has been completed.
The council's draft annual plan 2010-11 states the park project will be delayed until the final shape of the aquatic centre is known.
Mr Bronn said the council could not be emphatic about the proposal until the draft annual plan for 2010-11 was adopted.
Council was to meet today to accept the draft annual plan, discuss the Makino Aquatic Centre redevelopment and decide whether it will go to the next stage.
