The boys were hot on the heels of a speedy girl at the inter-primary triathlon at Cloverlea School.
More than 50 students from 15 Manawatu Schools took part in the triathlon yesterday.
Sweeping to the top of the year 6 division was Riverdale Primary School student Zia MacDermid.
The 10-year-old athlete lapped girls and boys in the cycle section, before racing through her final swimming lap just as the runner-up entered the pool.
"I like the feeling of finishing and knowing you've done as hard as you could [have] done," Zia said.
Her mum Fiona, an international mountainbiking competitor, could not be there as she was competing down south.
But Zia's grandma, Jane, shouted support from the sideline.
