It will be two months tomorrow since Feilding farmer Scott Guy was shot dead outside his rural home, but his family are convinced his killer will be brought to justice.
Mr Guy, 31, was fatally shot while getting out of his car at the front gate of the Aorangi Rd house on the morning of July 8.
The lack of witnesses, early-morning timeframe and remote location have created problems for police, whose only leads are the theft of three puppies from the property, and two unidentified cars seen in the area on the morning of the shooting.
But his father, Bryan Guy, said the thought of Scott's killer escaping capture had not crossed his mind.
"I hadn't really contemplated that," he said. "We are quite confident they will be [caught]."
The reality of Scott's death was starting to sink in, but Mr Guy said they were coping well.
"Initially you get that shock and disbelief ... we're certainly missing him more now we realise he's not coming back.
"We are always talking about him and I think that's a good thing."
Mr Guy spoke this week to his son's widow, Kylee Guy, who is due to have Scott's second child in about two weeks.
Mrs Guy, 27, has stayed with her mother and son Hunter, 2, since her husband's death, and has indicated that she may never return to the Aorangi Rd house.
"She's good and certainly improving," Mr Guy said. "She's not travelling over here with the baby so close."
Mr Guy plans to travel to Hawke's Bay with his wife Joanne to attend the birth of his grandson.
He said his family was still overwhelmed by the support from the community, who continue to send cards, flowers and emails.
"We are still getting a lot of people who, when they see us, tell us they are supporting us and praying for us."
Despite the delay in finding the killer, Mr Guy said the police investigating the homicide had been "fantastic".
"They keep us really well informed about what they are up to and how it's going. We can see how hard they've been working," he said.Police called the Guy family every day in the beginning, but the calls had lessened in the past fortnight, he said.
Detective Inspector Sue Schwalger, who leads the investigation, said police were determined to find Mr Guy's killer.
"A number of leads are being pursued with enough information and inquiries [are] keeping a large team fully focussed," she said.
The two cars seen on the morning of the shooting were not local.
"I particularly appeal to anyone who has been holding back on information in the hope that someone else will speak up.
"Now is the time to reconsider that decision and come forward."
