The opening of the NZ Cycle Classic Men's Tour today will coincide with a 33-day-long festival of cycling-related events and activities in Manawatu.

The festival will run between the two international cycling events being held in Manawatu – the Men's Tour this week and the NZCT Women's Tour at the end of February.

The events include community mountain, street and track rides, competitions, coaching seminars, free safety checks and family fun days.

Two community rides, the Mitre 10 Gran Fondo and La Femme Fun Ride, would give amateur riders a chance to complete an international stage on the same day as professional riders.

Race director Jorge Sandoval said the Gran Fondo was about the challenge rather than being a race.

"If you'd like to know what it's like to race a stage of the men's international cycle classic and feel like a pro, here's your chance, for this is as close as it gets. This event is for everyone who loves to ride bikes and wants to do a stage of the international tour or part of it."

Bike Manawatu's Glenys Taylor said women taking part in the La Femme Fun Ride would be able to do the ride and see the finish of the Women's Tour's fourth stage.

"This ride is perfect timing for mums who have sent the kids back to school – you now have some time to get out and do some training."

Sport Manawatu's events and recreation manager Kathy McMillan said the international tours would showcase Manawatu as being the best place to ride a bike.

"33 Days of Cycling has something for everyone, from cycling fanatics to the people that just want to head out for a family ride with the kids on the weekend."

She encouraged people to get into the spirit by using active transport during the festival.

"Travelling to work, or anywhere, by bike is fantastic for your wallet, the environment and your fitness levels.

"We really want to encourage everyone to hop on a bike at least once during the 33 days, whether it's just biking to work or taking part in a race," Ms McMillan said.
