Palmerston North residents have taken to the ice in droves, and Douglas Webber Events says the high numbers of locals getting their skates on at the weekend means closer to 30,000 than 20,000 people may buckle up during its ice rink's four-week stay in The Square.
"People pick it up really fast,'' said Gareth Webber.
"The skates are designed for beginners, and generally people who come along for the first time are skating within 10 or 20 minutes.''
So far, they have managed without injury or accident.
Mr Webber said the design of the rink, and keeping the ice dry, helped keep people safe even when they fell.
"But I got a fright when I came back after lunch on Saturday and saw there were two ambulances there. I could not imagine what might have happened.''
His fears were misplaced: the vehicles were in The Square raising awareness of the St John street appeal.
Mr Webber said one skater had collapsed on the ice.
"I think he just passed out and fell down. He was a really good skater, it was not like an accident.''
