A rain band brought heavy downpours to Manawatu this morning, but MetService says it is the wind people need to be wary of.
Metservice forecaster Derek Holland said much of the country was expected to experience bad weather in the next few days.
But it would be particularly windy in Manawatu, he said.
"It's an extended period of wind so it's going to be strong and gusty through to Thursday.
"Then on Friday there's a southerly change and the wind will drop off eventually.''
Winds reaching up to 60kmh would blast the region, with gusts reaching 90-100kmh in some places.
"For today and tomorrow we're looking at showery conditions with thunderstorms and hail storms possible. We're not expecting another rain band, as you experienced this morning.''
There would also be heavy swells in the west, which would bring "big waves to the beaches in Manawatu''.
