Bus fares between Palmerston North and Ashhurst are to increase by 50c each way for adults and children over 5 from next month.
The one-way fare will rise from $3 to $3.50 for adults and from $1.50 to $2 for children over 5 when Tranzit Coachlines' new five-year contract starts on July 10. SuperGold card holders and under 5s will continue to travel for free on the service, which runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Horizons passenger transport committee chairman Vern Chettleburgh said the increase was the result of rising fuel and running costs.
"Fares on the Ashhurst service have been maintained at their current prices for about a decade. Through this time we have seen increases in fuel prices and GST and are now at the stage where we need to raise fares slightly to ensure the service is sustainable," he said.
The route and timetable will remain the same.
