A truck driver involved in a fatal crash that killed an elderly Taranaki couple has appeared in court.
Henry Anthony Tawhai, 53, of Palmerston North, faces two charges of driving dangerously causing death and one of driving under the influence of drugs.
He entered no plea before a registrar in Palmerston North District Court yesterday and was remanded on bail until next month.
On May 28, Tawhai's truck flipped on State Highway 3 near Motunui, east of New Plymouth, and lost a load of metal pipes.
The pipes crushed a car in which Urenui couple Ern and Nancy Sutton, both 83, were travelling.
They died at the scene.
Tawhai was taken to Taranaki Base Hospital with moderate arm injuries and was later in intensive care and had surgery.
