Palmerston North burger lovers’ long wait is nearly over, with construction of the Wendy’s fast-food restaurant under way.
The restaurant chain has posted a message on its website, updating site progress.
‘‘Good news – we have started building in Palmerston North and will be opening before Christmas, weather permitting,’’ it read.
The site, on the corner of Argyle and Rangitikei streets, was fenced when the Manawatu Standard visited yesterday.
Workers in diggers were clearing the concrete foundation of the building that used to occupy the site.
Wendy’s marketing manager, Fay Stretch, had told the Standard it would take about 14 weeks to build the restaurant.
Wendy’s confirmed its intention to open in Palmerston North in July last year.
It was granted resource consent in December, and was originally earmarked to open in March.
Wendy’s opened in New Zealand in 1988 in Te Atatu.
