An 85-year-old man is dead after the quad bike he was riding and another vehicle collided on Aranui Road on the outskirts of Palmerston North.
Acting sergeant Warwick Denby of the police strategic traffic unit said the accident happened between Gillespies Line and Rongotea Road around 4.40pm yesterday.
It appeared the elderly man had stopped while a south-bound vehicle went by, but collided with a second car.
The driver and passenger of the car were "extremely traumatised" as were members of the man's family, who were also present.
The man died at the scene.
Police are calling for any other witnesses who might have seen the quad bike rider before the accident.
In particular, they would like to speak to the driver of the vehicle that went by just before the collision.
