Yarn bombers have struck Palmerston North once again, transforming a prominent sculpture into Cinderella.

And "the slipper fits" is the verdict from Prince Charming.

Royal New Zealand Ballet dancer Kohei Iwamoto, who played the prince in the opening night of the Royal New Zealand Ballet's production of Cinderella, was among the dancers who spotted Paul Dibble's Broadway Ave sculpture's overnight transformation from woolly rags to sequin-slippered riches.

"It seems Palmerston has its very own Cinderella. She's quite tall - I'm not sure I could lift her, either.”

The woman in Dibble's sculpture Who's Afraid located outside the Regent Theatre on Broadway was last week styled in a woolly scarf, leggings, vest and hat.

The knitted pink wool and sequin ballet slipper was added to the ensemble following the RNZB's Palmerston North debut of its Tower Season of Cinderella on Tuesday evening.

A group called "Woolly Riot" claimed responsibility for the statue's original makeover.

RNZB Tour manager Meredith Dooley said when the company heard that Palmerston North was the latest ‘yarn bombing' target, they hoped it would still be intact by the time Cinderella came to the city.

Sure enough, the vest and one legging still remained, but the fate of her other garments remains unknown.

The dancers were delighted at the yarn bombers' tribute to their presence in Palmerston North, Mrs Dooley said.

"It's brilliant and now the note and slipper from some fans is such a fun addition. Hopefully, she'll be wearing another costume when we return for Giselle in December."
