Toby Neylan got a jump start on the competition at the 2012 Dancesport Spectacular in Palmerston North at the weekend.
At 4 months, Toby is too young to be learning the cha-cha just yet, but he was happy to join his parents Bridget and Martin Neylan for a twirl around the Arena 3 floor.
The couple were among the spectators who watched more than 100 competitors dance at Saturday's competition and danced with their son during a break.
Bridget is originally from Palmerston North and has danced for Shirley Wall Dance Academy; it was at a dance that she met her husband. The family is now based in Wellington and did not compete this year because of their son's recent arrival.
Event organiser Shirley Wall said the competition had been running for more than 20 years.
With entrants from around the North Island attending, Mrs Wall was happy with the turnout.
"Numbers have been down in most competitions, so it's great to see such a strong showing here."
