A big red rhododendron named after Sir Edmund Hillary has been planted in Kimbolton by his widow, June, Lady Hillary.
She planted the new variety at Heritage Park in Kimbolton yesterday.
There is already a rhododendron tree in residence at the gardens - a result of seed given to New Zealand by the Queen of Nepal in the 1970s.
Heritage Park Rhododendron Charitable trust chairman Jim Howard said growing and breeding the variety took a lot of skill and many years.
Proceeds from the sale of the rhododendron, named "Sir Edmund Hillary", will be divided equally between a Himalayan trust, Heritage Park and Cross Hills Garden and Nursery, also near Kimbolton in northern Manawatu.
