Police say the car which crashed in a suburban Palmerston North street, killing the driver, rolled several times before it landed against a parked car.
Witnesses are being sought to the crash that happened at Crewe Cres, Hokowhitu, shortly before midnight last night.
Acting Senior Sergeant Phillip Ward, of Palmerston North Police, said the car appeared to have gone along the street from the Manawatu St end and was heading towards Pahiatua St before it went straight through a roundabout, taking out a large rock that had been at the centre of the roundabout.
The car rolled several times and crashed into a parked Toyota car, badly damaging it.
The driver of the out-of-control car was thrown from the vehicle. He was believed to be in his 30s.
Resident Krishne Gurung said the crash happened outside her house.
She said her family were woken by a "tremendous noise" and when she went outside to investigate she saw a bloodied man lying face down in the street.
Police were unable to give any other information about the crash, but were calling for witnesses.
