Two people were flown to hospital by helicopter with moderate to serious injuries after a two vehicle smash on the Desert Rd.
The two cars were travelling in the opposite directions when the collision occurred at about 4pm Tuesday.
A 15-year-old received serious injuries and was flown to Palmerston North Hospital by the Taupo Greenlea Rescue Helicopter.
A baby from the same car escaped injury.
The male driver from the other vehicle was also flown to hospital for treatment for moderate injuries.
Pilot Todd Dunham said the roof was completely ripped off one car and it had rolled several times.
"It's amazing that the severity wasn't worse. It could have been a lot worse than what it turned out. They were very lucky."
