Holiday drivers 'exceed expectations'
Palmerston North police say driver behaviour over Labour Weekend exceeded expectations, though the long weekend did see an increase in arrests and disorderly behaviour.
Acting Senior Sergeant Phil Ward said the six crashes and six tickets for drink driving between Friday night to Monday fell well below what police would expect from a holiday weekend.
''From our point of view we're generally pleased with driving behaviour over the weekend.''
House and car thefts were also down, he said.
''We haven't had a lot of people coming home from holidays and saying their house has been robbed.''
While thefts and driving incidents were down, there was a total of 42 arrests - up on previous weekends, he said.
There were also more arrests for disorderly behaviour on Saturday night than in the past few Saturdays, Mr Ward said.
