Palmerston North police are investigating an attack on an 18-year-old woman near the Esplanade on the weekend.

Witnesses are being sought after a woman walking in the native bush area between the Bridle Track and Victoria Esplanade Dr on Saturday morning was pushed to the ground and assaulted.

Police would especially like to speak to two male cyclists wearing yellow vests who came to the aid of the victim after the assault.

The offender was described as a male in his 20s wearing a blue hooded top and a dark-coloured beanie.

Anyone with information can contact Detective Andy Livingstone at the Palmerston North police station on 06 351 3600.

Will Aaron Cruden's omission hurt or help the All Blacks?

Hurt - he needs as much game time as possible.

Help - finally Beauden Barrett will get a proper run.

Hmmm - no biggie, just a temporary hitch.

Who is Cruden? I support the All Whites.
