Palmerston North’s Guy Fawkes celebrations peak today after three days of fireworks sales and the city’s fire service is pleased the occasion has so far sparked no serious callouts.

A cabbage tree set alight by a firework’s burst on Friday evening almost lost its top but Palmerston North firefighters quickly put out the fire, station officer Ian King said.

Meanwhile, police reported boy racers were letting off fireworks too close to traffic into the small hours of Saturday morning, an offence carrying a fine of up to $200.

Fireworks went on sale on Friday last week for the now-limited four-day Guy Fawkes sales period.

What would you like the weather to do in March?

Stay sunny, I've loved February!

A few showers to appease the farmers, but not too much.

A whole month of rain is needed.
