Man jailed for killing girlfriend
The Otaki Beach man who killed his girlfriend after shooting her in the head will spend at least three years in prison.
Tuaine Llewellyn Bevan, 28, was sentenced at the High Court at Palmerston North today to five years and eight months imprisonment for shooting Stacey Lake, 23, in their home last year.
Justice Jillian Mallon imposed a minimum prison term of three years.
On the afternoon of May 8 last year, Bevan fired a shot that killed 23-year-old Lake as she lay on the bed of their house in Ngaio St, Otaki Beach.
The Crown alleged Bevan planned the killing because of a domestic dispute, but the defence said the shooting was an accident - that Bevan had removed the gun's magazine and didn't realise it could be fired.
A jury acquitted him of the murder in September but found him guilty of manslaughter.
Bevan was also sentenced to one year imprisonment for possession of cannabis for supply and illegal possession of a firearm. He had already pleaded guilty to those charges.
