The balmy weather has returned, and just in time for students to lap up the extra rays round exam leave.

While some Morris St flatmates cooled off in the pool they created on the roof of their Palmerston North flat yesterday, Blake, 10, and Madi Davis, 8, from Palmerston North have fun digging holes in the sand at Foxton Beach.

MetService weather forecaster Heath Gullery said the sunshine-filled days should last until Saturday afternoon, but people should expect a few frosty mornings as well.

The clearer the night, the cooler the morning, Mr Gullery said, and Palmerston North is in for a few this weekend.

However, it'll be short and sweet for those fleeting sunbeams with clouds set to come in on Sunday afternoon, with some scattered rain continuing into Monday.

The city will be welcoming highs of 19 degrees Celsius over the weekend, according to the MetService.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
