Five people were injured, with a man flown to hospital in a critical condition, after a two-car crash near Tangimoana.

The crash happened about 6.20pm Friday at the intersection of Tangimoana Rd and Campion Rd, 30km north of Palmerston North and 11km west of Ohakea.

Police shift commander Bruce Mackay said firefighters removed the injured from the vehicles, before taking one person by helicopter to Palmerston North Hospital.

The car's roof had to be removed to free him.

A St John spokesman said the other four people were also taken to the hospital's emergency department; two children with moderate injuries and two adults with minor injuries.
