The unsettled weather patterns of rain and showers followed by sun can be expected to hang around for the rest of the week, according to MetService.

Meteorologist Daniel Corbett said the North Island can expect to see more unsettled weather this week, with a drier outlook for most South Island places.

"Overall, it's a reasonably unsettled week for the North Island," he said.

"For the next couple of days, a low brings showers or rain to many North Island places. However, a drier spell is expected in most areas on Wednesday. This will hopefully enable good viewing of the partial solar eclipse on Wednesday morning."

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
