A Chilean tramper who went missing overnight near Masterton is expected to be walked out of the bush this morning.

Masterton Police Senior Sergeant Carolyn Watson said the 29-year-old was found alive by Search and Rescue helicopter at 7am this morning.

She believed he was cold, but otherwise uninjured and is expected to be walked out of the bush by Search and Rescue this morning.

The helicopter took off at first light today to help find the man, who was lost at forest park Mt Holdsworth after a day hike yesterday.

The man lost the track on his return journey to the lodge and alerted authorities to his predicament by way of a cell phone.

He told searchers he was not equipped for an overnight stay.

He was believed to be in the sub-alpine zone and below the bush edge last night.

Five volunteer search teams were deployed to the area overnight and in that time the man's cell phone battery died.
