Palmerston North burger lovers' two-year wait for the Baconator is nearly over, with Wendy's days away from opening.

The American burger chain will open the Rangitikei St store on Monday.

The company first announced it would be heading to the city in 2010, but construction only started this year.

Wendy's human resources manager Kathy Matthews said she was excited for the opening.

''We've been working on coming to Palmy for so long, so we're stoked to finally be here.''

She said the reception she had got from people had been great, and the crew were expecting to be busy as soon as they open at 9am.

''I've been telling people it opens at 9am and people have been saying 'we will see you at eight'.''

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
