Burger lovers were lined up outside Palmerston North's first Wendy's store 90 minutes before its doors opened.
The Rangitikei St fast food spot was packed for much of yesterday, the local workforce of about 40 bolstered by staff from Auckland for the opening.
Wendy's NZ chief executive Danielle Lendich said it had been a busy day but things had gone "nice and smooth. It's been pretty flat out all day."
The store was the fourth opened by the chain in the past 18 months. Ms Lendich said lessons learnt from those openings had been applied in Palmerston North.
There had been strong demand for the store, she said.
"We've had people drive over from Marton today especially. They brought their grand-daughter over."
Ms Lendich said she had spoken to half a dozen customers from Palmerston North who had been driving every week or so to the Wendy's in Paraparaumu to get their fix.
The most popular item on the menu? The Baconator burger.
The store will open between 9am and midnight from Thursday to Saturday.
