A 13-year-old boy caught driving a stolen car at speeds of up to 160kmh near Levin this morning later told police it was his first time behind the wheel.

The boy was chased by police after he was spotted allegedly speeding in a stolen vehicle on the State Highway 1 stretch between Levin and Otaki about 4.30am.

The young driver took to the road in poor weather conditions and when arrested gave no explanation to police for his actions.

He was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, police said.

''It just defies description,'' Sergeant Derek Turvey, of Levin police, said.

''How we are not looking at a death or serious injury I do not know. It's just crazy stuff.''

The boy's parents were unaware of his early morning joyride, Mr Turvey said.

They were notified of his arrest and he will appear in Levin's Youth Court today.
