LATEST: Police have named the man who died after his motorbike hit a power pole near Shannon.

He was 28-year-old Patrick James O'Connor, of Levin. His passenger, who was injured in the crash, remains in hospital.

The crash happened about 1.15am yesterday at the intersection of Hennesey, East and Mangahao  roads just east of the Horowhenua town.

Police said the male passenger was riding pillion, but few other details were available.

The crash happened in a rural area in the 100kmh speed zone.

Skid marks on the road indicate the bike was heading towards Shannon when it failed to take a sweeping left-hand bend.

Grass on the side of the road was flattened and a ripped black puffer jacket lay next to a farm fence.

The police serious crash unit is investigating.
