A helicopter had to be called in to help put out a vegetation fire on Napier Rd which broke out right next to the gorge slip.

The fire took hold of the hillside on the Palmerston North side of the slip about 3.15pm yesterday.

Ashhurst chief fire officer Neil Alexander said the fire spread 30-40m up the hillside, and was 10m across at its widest.

Because it was so steep, it was too dangerous to be put out from the ground, so a helicopter was called in, he said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
