Neither man involved in a fatal motorbike crash near Shannon was wearing a helmet, police say.

Patrick James O'Connor, 28, was killed and his 32-year-old pillion passenger was seriously injured when the motorbike they were riding crashed into a power pole just after 1am on Sunday.

The crash happened east of the Horowhenua town at the intersection of Hennesey, East and Mangahao roads.

Acting Detective Sergeant Darcy Parke said the serious crash unit was still investigating, but speed and alcohol are believed to be factors. It also appeared neither man had been wearing a helmet. The survivor of the crash, Mr O'Connor's friend, was thrown across the road and landed in a paddock.

He suffered broken bones and was in a stable condition yesterday in a Palmerston North Hospital general ward.
