A 61-year-old man was arrested overnight following a string of car break-ins around the central city.

Acting Senior Sergeant Phil Ward said the man was arrested about 5am after a number of cars were broken into and items stolen in the areas of Main St, Church St and Ferguson St.

Police found the man on Ferguson St driving a car that was reported stolen late last night.

Inside the car was a stash of items including iPods, handbags, wallets, tools, radar detectors and clothing.

The items have since been linked to property stolen from three cars overnight.

The man was charged with unlawful taking and three counts of theft from a car and will appear in the Palmerston North District Court today.
