Pahiatua police had a secret four-legged weapon for their annual tug-o-war challenge with the town's volunteer firefighters.

Deuce, a 4-year-old police dog, joined his comrades in blue yesterday for the competition, a fixture of Pahiatua's Christmas festival.

Helping the police to a convincing win over the firefighters were, pictured, Constable Chris Wakelin, front, Senior Constable Earl Fincham, centre, and dog handler Constable Lloyd McKaye.

The win was revenge for the police after the firefighters won last year.

The Christmas gala, held in the park in the centre of Pahiatua, also featured children's entertainment, a barbecue, performances from the area's schools and, of course, a visit from Santa.
