Judge: 'I'm not sure what planet you're on'
An unemployed man with 225 previous convictions does not see any need to change his ways.
"I'm not sure what planet you're living on," Judge Grant Fraser told Darryl Brent Hullen, 45, of Waitarere Beach.
"Your contemptuous disregard for sanctions has caught up with you again. Sadly I'm clearly of the view that this doesn't mark the end of the revolving door for you."
In the Palmerston North District Court today Hullen was jailed for a year on five charges of breaching release conditions, two of dangerous driving, and one each of theft, shoplifting and failing to stop for police.
A police summary says on November 2 he stole deodorant and underwear from Farmers and was so keen to get away from The Plaza car park he mounted a footpath to avoid the barrier arms.
"He then continued to drive along the footpath where a member of the public was pushing a pram with her two young children in it."
Earlier in the day he drove away from Foxton's Mobil without paying for $80 worth of petrol.
Four days later police spotted Hullen on Waitarere Beach road.
They signalled for him to pull over, but he didn't stop.
He reached speeds of 145 kmh through Waitarere Beach before the chase was abandoned.
Hullen also beached release conditions from a previous sentence by moving house, failing to report to probation and not turning up to his counseling.
Defence lawyer Mark Alderdice said Hullen hadn't taken his medication.
"He's hopeful that there's some light at the end of the tunnel."
Judge Fraser doubted that and said he wouldn't be surprised if Hullen doubled or trebled his list of convictions.
Hullen explained his driving by saying he was "showing off" and "silly stuff - not that bad".
He also told probation he did not need to change.
Judge Fraser was unimpressed.
"The community needs to be protected from people like you who demonstrate no responsibility what so ever."
Hullen's hefty conviction list includes drug, burglary and fraud offending.
