The Manawatu District Council has renamed two rural roads to reduce confusion.
Highway 56 will now be known as Rangiotu Rd, and a portion of Awahuri-Feilding Rd has been renamed Awahuri Rd.
The decisions were made at a council meeting yesterday.
A report by council principal planner Wendy Thompson said Highway 56, which runs from Opiki to Himatangi, lost its designation as a state highway in 1997.
Its name since had caused confusion so the council consulted residents on a new name.
In August, the council sent letters to 161 landowners and residents asking for their view on a change to Rangiotu Rd.
Of those who responded, 29 agreed with the name change, 12 disagreed, and 17 agreed the name should change but did not like the council’s suggestion.
The renamed part of Awahuri-Feilding Rd runs between the corner of South St and West St in Feilding and Raceway Motel.
Ms Thompson said it appeared the road had previously been listed in council’s official street address index as Awahuri Rd.
