Fire restrictions have been put in place throughout Manawatu, Rangitikei and Horowhenua.
Principal rural fire officer Brent Fanning said the restrictions came into force yesterday, and meant fires in those areas required a permit.
The number of vegetation fires had increased this year following a windy, dry spring.
On Thursday night, the fire service was called to a fire that had reignited in a tree stump following a burnoff on Raumai Rd in Bulls, he said.
There was also a vegetation fire on Santoft Rd near Lake Alice on Thursday.
