Police are looking for witnesses after two supermarkets were targeted by armed thieves.

Detective Sergeant Ashley Gurney said a person entered the first supermarket, Countdown in Kelvin Grove, about 9:20 Sunday but was stopped by store security.

The offender hit the security guard with a sharp object, cutting him, before fleeing the scene and getting into a dark coloured two door car.

Ten minutes later, Countdown on Broadway was similarly entered by an armed offender, who threatened staff with a weapon.

They took cash from the store and left.

The offender in both situations was disguised, and police were not ruling out that the incidents were linked, Mr Gurney said.

Victims from both supermarkets have been referred to victim support.

Police are investigating and would like to hear from witnesses, or anyone with information about either incident, on 06 349 3600, or via Crimestoppers 0800 555 111
