Motorists are being held up in heavy traffic between Wellington and Manawatu.
Police are receiving reports of heavy and slower moving traffic on State Highway 1 north of Wellington, police central communications shift commander sergeant Andy Dow said.
''The only reason we can find is that there are various Boxing Day events in the Lower North Island and with the nice weather people are out and about.''
He asked drivers to be patient and drive to the conditions over the Christmas break.
