A man walking on a dark country road has been killed after being hit by a taxi, police say.

The accident occurred at 2.15am today on Hokio Beach Road, Levin.

Police say a taxi was travelling along the road when it collided with the pedestrian, a 29-year-old Levin man, who had been walking west on Hokio Beach Road.

The man died at the scene.

''The deceased had been walking in a rural area with little street lighting and in dark clothing,'' police say.

The crash is being investigated by a number of Police staff including the Serious Crash Analyst.  The vehicle will be inspected and the scene analysed to determine the cause of the crash.
