The holiday scorchers are set to continue as many in Manawatu head back to work.

The mercury is forecast to top 27 degrees this afternoon, after yesterday's national high of 28 degrees encouraged Palmerston North residents to hit the beach for Wellington anniversary day.

MetService forecaster Philippa Murdoch said there was a chance of an isolated shower for inland areas of Manawatu this afternoon, but otherwise it was set to be a fine, hot week.

Wednesday and Thursday were shaping up nicely with fine sunny weather and 26 and 24 degree highs forecast.

Showers would develop on Friday morning but would clear early afternoon.

It would remain fine and hot through the weekend with temperatures in the mid-20s.
