The flying fox has been stolen from Palmerston North's Esplanade.

The popular piece of equipment at the playground went missing on either Sunday or Monday night, said council staff.

City council contracts and leisure officer Nicki Hanna said the theft was disheartening, especially after a $20,000 investment to ensure it was in the best possible working order for summer.

Hanna asks anyone who saw anything linked to the theft to contact police.

The park is closed to vehicles at night, so the people who took it would have had to carry the equipment to either the Fitzherbert Avenue or Park Road entrance.
