A mysterious death at a house in Manawatu is under investigation.

Levin Detective Senior Sergeant Marc Hercock said a 48-year-old man was found dead at a Bainesse Rd property where he was staying at 8:30am on Saturday.

He was found by the homes' owner, who called police and an ambulance.

The cause of his death remains unexplained.

Mr Hercock said they hoped to have a post-mortem completed by tomorrow night.

A scene examination has been completed and police are in the process of making further lines of inquiry to piece together his last movements
