A controlled fire at Awapuni Nurseries had to be put out this morning when a wind change fanned smoke across the western end of Palmerston North.

Principal rural fire officer Stewart Davies said a permit had been issued for the burning of wood blocks during the restricted fire season.

At first, the smoke went straight up in the air, but later blew into the city prompting complaints.

Mr Davies visited the site and assured the public the fire was under control and was being extinguished.
