A 24-year-old man wanted by police was found hiding underneath a Russell St rental property this morning.

The man was arrested about 11.30am after several police surrounded the property.

Officers could be seen lying next to the house shining torches under the building while a canine unit was deployed inside.

Sergeant Mike Yates said the man came out from under the house voluntarily and was arrested on a recall warrant. He would appear in Palmerston North District Court tomorrow.

''He's somebody we'd been looking for for a long time.''

The man was included in the wanted section of the police website launched last month for failing to appear in the Palmerston North District Court.

A woman in the house was also arrested on unrelated charges, Mr Yates said.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
