A Feilding plasterer jailed for violating and indecently assaulting a girl says he has no memory of one incident and only a vague recollection of the other.

However, Duane Ashley Johansen, 45, accepted the young girl, aged between 5and 10 at the time, is telling the truth.

"Every time I have spoke to Johansen about this offending he's recoiled in horror at the thought that anyone could treat a child that way, but the fact of the matter is he did," defence lawyer Fergus Steedman told the Palmerston North District Court yesterday.

The indecent assault occurred in 2011 and the sexual violation last year.

On both occasions the girl was asleep, only to be woken by Johansen.

Mr Steedman said Johansen had been drinking before the violation and didn't have a "clear recollection" of what happened. He could remember nothing of the indecent assault.

Since he had been in custody, Johansen had not had a drink and was feeling better for it.

Judge Barbara Morris urged him to get help in jail.

"It's probably the case that a sober you would not have done this, but the voluntary consumption of alcohol can never mitigate someone's offending."

He also admitted driving while forbidden and a charge of drink-driving - his breath alcohol level was 822 micrograms/litre. The legal limit is 400mcg.

Johansen received credit for admitting the offending and showing remorse, and wassentenced to three years' jail.
