Firefighters spent almost three hours in Terrace End last night after a pile of driftwood was deliberately set alight.

Officers from the Milson fire station were called to the blaze on Ruahine St about 9.30pm.

Station officer Richard Harley said the fire was in driftwood collected and piled up by the Manawatu District Council about a month or so ago.

Set alight, it was essentially a bonfire. The fire was also attended by Palmerston North volunteer rural fire force.

Is high tea at a funeral parlour your cup of tea?

Yes, it's fun and even educational.

Hmmm, I don't object but it's not for me.

No, it's macabre and in bad taste.

Over my dead body ...
