A woman who was trapped in a car crash on Tremaine Ave near the National Library in Palmerston North has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The Mitsubishi Colt the woman was driving collided with a Mitsubishi Pajero before coming to a stop in the fence of Barnardos Early Learning Centre at about 1.15pm.

The man driving the Pajero was unharmed.

The woman, who was in her 60s, was freed and then transported to Palmerston North Hospital where she remained in a serious condition.

Senior Sergeant Phil Skoglund said parts of Tremaine Ave had been blocked off to allow the emergency services to get to the scene easily.
