It was a grim day for motorcyclists in the region on Sunday, with four involved in crashes, two of them injured seriously.
A 15-year-old girl from Carterton was also killed when a train and ute collided near Carterton about 8am.
Police yesterday released the name of the girl, Grace Ellen Diedrichs.
Two motorcyclists were involved in a crash in Horowhenua.
About 11.20am the two motorcyclists, both in their 40s, crashed on State Highway 57, Arapaepae Rd, near Waihou Rd, blocking the northbound lane for almost an hour.
Highway Patrol Senior Constable Graeme Topping said in the initial crash, one motorcyclist was left lying on the road after manoeuvring around a northbound car turning right into Waihou Rd. His motorcycle came to rest on the side of the road on the grass verge.
On seeing the man on the road, a second vehicle braked heavily to stop, creating another collision with a motorcycle that was travelling behind.
The man who came off his bike first was the only one taken to Palmerston North Hospital, with moderate injuries.
About the same time, at 11am, the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter was called to a trail bike accident near Ormondville.
A teenage girl fell off her bike and suffered injuries to her upper body.
Later, at 2.30, the rescue helicopter was called back to Ormondville, when a second trail bike rider was injured. A 32-year-old man suffered neck and back injuries after falling from his motorbike.
