Ewen Macdonald has been transferred from Manawatu Prison to Christchurch Prison.
He spent Wednesday night in Rimutaka Prison before being taken to Christchurch on Thursday.
The Corrections Department declined to comment on the move last night.
Macdonald, 32, of Feilding, was acquitted of murdering his brother-in-law Scott Guy last year but found guilty of other charges and was jailed last September for five years.
In December he was denied an early release, with the Parole Board telling him he would have to undergo ‘‘intensive psychological therapy’’ before he faced the board later this year.
Mr Guy’s widow, Kylee Guy, was reportedly upset at not being told about Macdonald’s transfer, which One News reported was to assist in his rehabilitation programme.
Mr Guy was shot outside his rural Manawatu home just before dawn on July 8, 2010.
Macdonald was charged with his murder nine months later, and was acquitted by a High Court jury last year.
After his arrest, he confessed to a string of crimes including the arson of an old farmhouse on Scott and Kylee Guy’s property in October 2008, and vandalising their new home with an axe and offensive graffiti about three months later.
